I love this plugin so far. It does exactly what I need. However, I need this to replace my themes existing menu on the left side. When I add this widget it just makes a second menu...i need it to replace the original instead. In a nutshell, I am trying to make my front page shorter and more compressed, so I need smaller menus on the left side...

This can be several things:
There's a widget above the AVH Extended Categories Widget. Solution: Just remove that widget.
The widget has been hardcoded into the theme. Solution: Hack your theme.

yeah, thought there would be a widget as well but the space is empty, suggesting that it's just a default. Any suggestions on how i ould go about hacking it. It's a Templatic theme and I am VERY new to this

I'm not familiar with the theme so it's hard to tell you where to look and what to do.
There's usually a file called sidebar.php, that's the best place to start.

I can help you but you would have to send me the theme so I can look at it locally if you like. Let me know and I can shoot you an email where to send it to.
