404 error
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:35:55 AM »
Hi Peter:
Thanks for the great plugin. I have set up a group called 'Home' and selected about 8 categories from the 50 or so categories in my blog. I have put the AVH Extended Category: Category Group widget on my blog homepage and it displays the categories with the post counts, but when I click on any of the categories I get a 404 error. Under the General Options settings I have selected the Home Group and Nonexistence Group to display 'Home', and the Default Group to 'none'. I am using WP 3.0.1 with the Thesis theme and AVH v3.2.1. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your time.
Doug

Can you put up the widget?
I'll be going out for a few hours, so if you want to do it only for me testing, we can set up a time where I can test it.

BTW I like your site, it's clean and professional looking.

Peter:
The widget is on the 'Muscle Talk Blog' page from the main menu, I don't have it displaying on the Home page, have other widgets there.
Thanks for the compliment, built it about 2 years ago and been adding different features here and there. Thanks so much for the quick replies, it means a lot and I promote your plugin, it's clean and simple and lets you choose which categories to display, great job.

Hi Peter. Was just wondering if you had a chance to look at the site, MuscleRepairShop.com and the widget on the blog page. Thanks for all you do and have a great day.  Doug

Could you add the default category widget, the one that comes with WordPress, as well? I was wondering what the links are with the standard WordPress widget.

Peter, I added the default WP category widget just below the AVH widget. The Video Instructions categories (and all of those below it) are protected content (thru the Wishlist plugin) and that's why I don't want those to show in the AVH widget. Any insight or help into this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.

With the core widget the categories result in a 404 as well. It seems the problem is more of a WordPress nature and not so much a problem of the plugin.

I'll see what I can find about this.

You can take down the default categories widget.

Doug,

Do you have anything filled out in the option Category base on the Permalink settings page?
I wouldn't rely on visual conformation, just click the option, hit CTRL-A to if anything is selected.

Peter, nothing in the optional Category base under Permalinks. My Permalinks are under the Custom option, set to  /%postname%/

What happens if you enter the Category Base with : category
And save the options?

Peter:
I was able to figure out the problem, I had installed another category plugin (called Top Level Categories) and there was a conflict. I deleted it and now everything works fine. Thanks for all of your help and support for a great plugin! Have a great day!
